Nangchen Boycott Spreads to Neighboring Areas
May 2011 19

We’re hearing that the Tibetan boycott of Chinese vegetable stores in Nangchen, eastern Tibet, has spread to Dzaduo county and Surmang. This is a clear sign that Tibetans are growing more aware about their power as consumers. The money they hold in their hands, even if just a hundred bucks, comes with the power to grant or deny business to the Chinese shops.

Latest updates indicate that several of the Chinese shops in those areas have closed down because of loss of business! This shows the extent to which Chinese shops rely on Tibetan patronage to survive.

As Tibetans buy from Tibetans, it will create a stronger internal Tibetan economy which will automatically strengthen the social and political bargaining power of the Tibetans wherever they unite in economic actions.
